October 28th is known as "International Animation Day," commemorating the birth of animation. Let’s share something different. "Keywords of Animation," with a total runtime of 6 minutes, is an animated short co-produced by Animation Academic Group and AnimeTaste, premiering online!
Creating this film might be one of the most interesting things I’ve ever done.
We gathered 26 animators (or groups), each using an approximately 8-second animated segment to describe or present a keyword related to animation (one for each letter of the alphabet from A to Z). Among these words, some refer to historical styles (such as Double-bounce), some are standard tools for animators (such as Graphic Tablet), and others represent certain processes or stages in animation production (such as inking). We compiled all the segments into a film titled "Keywords of Animation."
For me, this animation is a brand-new experiment in exploring collective animation creation. I’d like to call it a "documentary-style film," which three-dimensionally showcases different aspects of animation aesthetics, styles, and history, while also reflecting, to some extent, the current state of Chinese animation.
The film was completed in June 2015. After completion, it was first screened and entered into competitions. I initially publicly screened it on September 17th during a lecture titled "Animation Academic Research and Its Context in the New Media Era" at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology. Subsequently, "Keywords of Animation" was selected for the competition section of the 4th China Independent Animation Film Forum and was screened at the Nanjing University of the Arts Art Museum on October 15th—this was also the first animation festival where the film was officially selected. On October 28th, International Animation Day, we chose to release "Keywords of Animation" online. Happy 123rd birthday to the art of animation.
