Although leprosy is rare today and can be cured with proper treatment, the government’s past policy of forced isolation implanted in people’s minds the image of leprosy as a terrifying disease, creating and perpetuating prejudice and discrimination against leprosy patients, former patients, and their families. Even today, after the laws isolating leprosy patients have been abolished, prejudice and discrimination against former patients and their families have not disappeared.
This animation is intended to be used as teaching material in elementary school classrooms, as a first step toward understanding the issue of leprosy.
