Zhu Yingtai disguises herself as a man to pursue her studies, where she forms a deep bond with Liang Shanbo. When the affair between Ma Wencai and Axiu is exposed, Prefect Ma proposes marriage to the Zhu family on his son's behalf. Consumed by guilt, Ma Wencai decides to help the two lovers elope, but unfortunately, the plan fails. Liang Shanbo is wrongfully imprisoned, falls ill, and dies. On her wedding procession, Zhu Yingtai throws herself into his grave to end her life. In the end, the two transform into butterflies, flying side by side as one.
