A theatrical anime adaptation of "Nine," a masterpiece of youth baseball manga that became one of Mitsuru Adachi's breakthrough works.
Shinya Niimi, who gained attention in middle school track and field, and Susumu Karasawa, a rising star in middle school judo, defy expectations by joining the weak baseball club of the prestigious Seishu High School. Their goal is to see the smile of the beautiful Yuri Nakao, the daughter of the baseball club's coach. Moved by Yuri's sorrowful expression as she laments the club's weakness, and simultaneously strongly drawn to her, Niimi and Karasawa become active members of the revitalized Seishu baseball club. The other previously struggling members of the baseball team also begin to regain their momentum. However, a powerful rival appears before the baseball club: Kentaro Yamanaka, the ace pitcher of the strong Bunan High School team, who also happens to be Yuri's childhood friend!
This film is a theatrical release based on the first TV special anime aired in May 1983, partially revised and with new voice recordings. The voice of the heroine, Yuri, was changed from Mariko Ishihara (from the original TV special) to Mariko Kurata, who sang this work's opening theme "Midsummer Runner." Kurata also received acclaim for her role as Yuri in the subsequent TV specials "Nine 2: Love Declaration" and "Nine: Final Chapter."
