A special TV anime adaptation of French literary giant Victor Hugo's masterpiece "Les Misérables," centering on the journey of the protagonist Jean Valjean. In the early 19th century, a poor young man named Jean Valjean is imprisoned for years in a dark cell for stealing a single loaf of bread. After his release, the world's injustices remain unchanged. Embittered, Jean encounters the clergyman Bishop Myriel and steals candlesticks from his church. However, Myriel acknowledges Jean's crime yet forgives him. Touched by this compassion, Jean vows to live as an honest man. Years later, after many twists and turns of fate, he changes his name to Madeleine and even becomes the mayor of a town, but further storms of destiny await him. This work was broadcast as part of the "Nissay Family Special" series of special TV programs sponsored by Nippon Life at the time. Produced by Toei Doga (now Toei Animation), the voice of the protagonist Jean was performed by the renowned actor Akio Kobayashi.
