Krabat, a beggar boy, is lured into becoming an apprentice to a sinister, one-eyed sorcerer. He works alongside several other boys in the sorcerer's mill while learning dark magic. Every Christmas, one of the boys must face the master in a magical duel—a duel the boy can never win, for the master alone is permitted to use the secret spell: Koraktor.
