A few scattered thoughts
When Glasses wrote in the letter to Mr. Thief, "What is the purpose of striving?" what I truly wanted to ask was: What is the purpose of education?
I remember reading this line in *The Courage to Be Happy*: "The goal of education is independence."
I believe it should at least not be about defining a child with a string of numbers, making the pursuit of those numbers the sole value of life. It should not be about teaching a child to hate, using high pressure to crush their curiosity about the world at an age when they should be fascinated by everything. Nor should it be about using one’s own unresolved past or shortcomings to constrain a child’s future.
More importantly, it’s about how to exist as a person in this world. To quote something I read elsewhere:
"Let the child become themselves, become a true human being."
Due to the extreme compression of the runtime, I apologize for not being able to express these ideas more thoroughly in the animation. I also regret that two of the adult characters could only be portrayed in a completely negative light—they are products of their time and should have had multidimensional personalities.
—Our generation is too.
Over the nearly two years of production, I often felt powerless in the face of the vast and intricate issue of Chinese-style education. Still, I could only take my own trembling step forward with my still-immature expression.
But tracing my motivation back to the very beginning, perhaps I just wanted to speak up for some of my friends, haha.
If this work can bring something to you in front of the screen, that would be wonderful~
