Rango is a chameleon kept in a glass tank, often fantasizing about being a great hero. Suddenly, he finds himself transported from modern American society to an old, dusty frontier town in the Wild West. The town is called Dirt.
After accidentally ending the life of a hawk right from the start, Rango inexplicably becomes the town's hero. The townspeople welcome him, and he happily takes on the role of savior for these pitiful residents—all desert animals. Since Rango often imagines himself as a hero, he gladly accepts the appointment from the town mayor and becomes the sheriff of Dirt. From then on, Rango begins his daily patrols around the town. He enjoys this life of being a "hero" and a "good man." However, what he doesn't know is that in Dirt, being a "good man" means death. At the edge of town, there is a cemetery specifically reserved for "good men." Yet, none of this stops Rango from moving forward; instead, he becomes even more determined to lead the townspeople in fighting for their rights.
In the end, an ultimate villain emerges—a rattlesnake, and Rango finds himself facing the most severe challenge of his life. Can he escape unscathed? Can he become the hero he has always imagined himself to be?
Johnny Depp will reunite with *Pirates of the Caribbean* director Gore Verbinski for their collaboration on Paramount's computer-animated film *Rango*.
*Rango* originated from an idea by Gore Verbinski, telling the story of a house pet venturing into the wild to rediscover its true nature. Johnny Depp will voice the pet, and *The Aviator* screenwriter John Logan is writing the script. Additionally, Verbinski has enlisted Industrial Light & Magic to create the animation for the film.
*Rango* is an ambitious animated production by Paramount, released in March 2011. Depp began his voice work in January 2011. After this film, Verbinski will direct the video game adaptation *BioShock* for Universal Pictures.
