"Sintel" (also known as "The Dragon's Tale," English: Sintel) is an open-license, Creative Commons animated film created by the Blender Foundation, codenamed Durian. With a runtime of 15 minutes, it tells the story of a Gypsy girl searching for her pet dragon.
The film was entirely produced using open-source software (such as Blender, Linux), with its production techniques, workflow, and assets fully disclosed to the public. It was directed by Ton Roosendaal, Chairman of the Blender Foundation, and Colin Levy, an artist from Pixar Animation Studios. The name "Sintel" originates from the Dutch word "sintel," meaning "cinder" or "ember," as confirmed in a blog comment by Ton Roosendaal: "'Sintel' is a glowing piece of coal or iron, burning, shining brightly, and then turning to ash..."
Plot
At the beginning of the film, a girl named Sintel is searching for a small dragon she calls Scales. The story then flashes back to Sintel discovering the injured baby dragon Scales with a wounded wing and caring for it, gradually building a deep bond. However, when Scales' wing fully heals and it can fly freely, it is captured by an adult dragon. From then on, Sintel embarks on a difficult journey to find Scales, constantly battling beasts and warriors.
Eventually, she arrives at a cave where an adult dragon resides—and beside it is a very familiar baby dragon. The dragon notices Sintel and attacks her, but hesitates at the moment it is about to kill her. Seizing the opportunity, Sintel delivers a fatal blow to the dragon, only to discover a familiar scar on its wing. She then realizes that this dying dragon is none other than the now-grown Scales. Looking at herself, she sees that her hair has turned white—time has flown by on her quest to find the dragon. Heartbroken, Sintel leaves the cave, unaware that Scales' child—the baby dragon—is stumbling along, following her.
