We always believe we have seen and thought of every image in the world. For years, I have been searching for the missing image. It is a photograph taken between 1975 and 1979 during the reign of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. This single photograph does not prove the tyranny of the Khmer Rouge, but it is enough to provoke thought, reflection, and the restoration of historical truth. I searched in vain through my country’s archives, documents, and propaganda materials. Now I understand that the absence of this image has its reasons, and I have stopped searching. Is this photograph obscene, vulgar, and meaningless? I have decided to create an image myself. What I present to you today is not a single picture, but a cinematic record of the investigative process. Some images should remain missing, replaced by others; here there is life, struggle, pain, beauty, the sorrow of vanished faces, the understanding of historical events; sometimes even elegance and courage: but never forgetting.
