Synopsis: The down-and-out scholar Ning Caichen travels to Guobei County to collect a debt, enduring hunger, cold, and heavy rain along the way. Unable to retrieve the money, he is forced to seek shelter for the night at the nearby dilapidated Lanruo Temple. At Lanruo Temple, Ning Caichen happens to witness Xiaoqian being pursued by Yan Chixia. Through a battle of wits and courage, Ning Caichen manages to deceive Yan Chixia and saves Xiaoqian's life.
