Ruby Gillman (voiced by Lana Condor) is a shy, awkward 16-year-old who just wants to fit in at Oceanside High. But she keeps feeling invisible among her peers. She's tutoring her skater-boy crush (voiced by Jaboukie Young-White) in math, but he only seems to admire her for her academic skills. Her overprotective, tiger mom (voiced by Toni Collette) not only forbids her from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach but has also laid down the strictest of rules: she is never, ever allowed to go in the water. However, when Ruby breaks her mom's number one rule, she discovers she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother (voiced by Jane Fonda), the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas. The Kraken are sworn to protect the world's oceans and have been locked in an ancient rivalry with the vain, power-hungry mermaids. But Ruby faces an immediate and pressing problem: the new transfer student, Chelsea (voiced by Annie Murphy), is not only stunning and popular but also happens to be a mermaid. If Ruby hopes to protect those she loves most, she must embrace her true identity, stand tall, and rise to the occasion.
