During the Wu Zhou period of the Tang Dynasty, Empress Wu hosted a grand autumn hunt, inviting nobles and skilled martial artists to gather and compete in horsemanship and archery. Pei Kun, heir to the Lianshan Hall, attended the event as a guest of Prince Teng’s household, alongside Princess Li Ying. However, during the celebration ceremony, assassins suddenly emerged in an attempt to kill Empress Wu. Fortunately, the Imperial Guards were heavily戒备, and the assassination failed. Yet, Pei Kun’s old acquaintance—Murong Ji, the young khan of Tuyuhun—unexpectedly became the prime suspect. Pei Kun noticed that the assassination method closely resembled that of the Spring and Autumn Dao, so he voluntarily stepped into the investigation, hoping to clear Murong Ji’s name and capture the mastermind behind the plot.
