In 1976, nine-year-old Mary Daisy Dinkle is a little girl living in Melbourne, Australia. She loves the cartoon "Noblet," sweetened condensed milk, and chocolate. Mary's mother is an alcoholic, while her father, who works at a tea packaging factory, spends his free time making bird specimens. Lonely and friendless, Mary one day impulsively writes a letter to Max Jerry Horowitz in New York City, USA, asking where American babies come from, and includes a cherry chocolate bar. Forty-four-year-old Max suffers from autism and obesity, and coincidentally also enjoys watching "Noblet" cartoons and eating chocolate. Their pen-pal relationship lasts from 1976 to 1994, during which each experiences many ups and downs in life, until the adult Mary finally travels to New York to visit Max...
