Hope (Lady Death's real name) was born in the Middle Ages. Her mother, Marion, was a Viking who was later taken to Central Europe by her father, Matthias. Matthias was a cruel and ruthless lord, and her mother soon died in agony. Hope once witnessed her father sacrificing human souls to demons. To expand the war, Matthias continuously conscripted soldiers, including Hope's friend Niccolo. After the war ended, all the new recruits perished, and a plague began to spread. Soon, rumors circulated among the people that Matthias was using witchcraft and other dark arts.
Before long, the local priest gathered an angry mob and stormed Matthias's castle, just in time to see Matthias making offerings to demons. Subsequently, Hope was captured and, implicated by her father, was sentenced to be burned at the stake for witchcraft.
Unwilling to die in such a manner, Hope used the incantation her father had employed to communicate with hell, which transported her to the underworld.
Upon arriving in hell, she was quickly captured by her "father's" minions and taken to his new castle in the underworld. There, she also encountered Niccolo, who had already fallen into corruption.
She was then thrown into an abyss by her father, where she was attacked by two wolves. After repelling them, they soon submitted to her. Later, she met Cremator, a hellish blacksmith who also harbored hatred for Matthias, and the two devised a plan to challenge Matthias together...
