In the vast expanse of the American West, the wild mustang Spirit and his herd live a peaceful life. However, when Spirit encounters humans for the first time, he is captured and trained to be a war horse. Fortunately, a kind Native American boy named Little Creek rescues Spirit from the training camp and brings him back to his tribe. In Little Creek's tribe, Spirit meets a paint mare named Rain. This time, Spirit struggles with the choice between returning to his homeland or staying, as he has fallen deeply in love with Rain. Sensing the love between the two horses, Little Creek decides to let them return to Spirit's homeland together.
