"The Story of Avanti" is a puppet animation film released by Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1980. Featuring the legendary figure Avanti as the protagonist, the entire animation is divided into over a dozen short stories.
Avanti is a typical figure in Islamic folklore, believed to have passed away around the end of the 13th century. Many regions and countries, from Xinjiang to the Mediterranean coast, claim him as a native or have similar legendary figures. He was a Sufi scholar and poet who disdained the nobility and sympathized with the common people. "Avanti" means teacher or knowledgeable person, an honorific title rather than a name. His actual name was Nasreddin, and out of respect, he is also referred to as Hoja Nasreddin Avanti (Hoja is also a title meaning "teacher") or Molla Nasreddin Hoja, among others.
In the hearts of the people, Avanti is the embodiment of wisdom and joy. Merely mentioning his name brings smiles to the faces of the sorrowful. He mocks the foolishness of the world, the opportunistic merchants, corrupt judges, and hypocritical mullahs who thrive in a wicked society... In short, he ridicules those who are hypocritical and exploit the poor under the guise of religious laws they created for deception.
Avanti's image—wearing an ethnic floral hat and riding a small donkey backward—has long been deeply ingrained in people's minds. His laughter is also distinctive: gentle yet remarkably penetrating.
Avanti is one of the finest creations of folk art and has been included among the "World Folk Art Figures."
