Mr. Moulin is an elderly miser who lives alone. In order to reach a bottle of liquor, he climbs onto a pile of books placed on a stepping stool. The unstable pile collapses, causing him to fall. As he tumbles down, he clutches the bottle along with a red sock containing his life savings. A priest arrives just in time to break his fall.
Seizing the opportunity presented by the accident, the priest assures Moulin that he possesses a device capable of guaranteeing his salvation. He attempts to persuade Moulin to sign over his savings to him, but Moulin insists on seeing the device in operation first. The priest unveils a tank with several portholes. Moulin climbs inside, and the priest stages an elaborate spectacle to simulate a journey to Heaven, taking advantage of Moulin's poor eyesight.
Convinced by the deception, Moulin signs over his savings to the priest. As the priest sits counting his ill-gotten gains, a knock echoes at the door. The Grim Reaper appears, somewhat perplexed, and explains that he is late to collect a certain Mr. Moulin, who died in a fall involving a red sock. Thinking quickly, Moulin points to the priest, who is holding the sock with the money. The Grim Reaper advances on the terrified priest and strikes him with his scythe, splattering blood across Moulin's face.
Left alone with the priest's contraption, Moulin enters it and presses a red button. The door closes and locks, trapping him inside.
