This animated film is a paper-cut animation adapted from the well-known fable "Passing Oneself Off as One of the Players in an Ensemble."
The King of Qi, Xuanwang, who loved extravagance, enjoyed listening to the yu (an ancient wind instrument) played in unison. However, he was dissatisfied with the skills of his court musicians. To please him, his ministers recruited 300 skilled yu players from across the country. Due to an oversight, they realized one player was missing just before presenting them to King Xuanwang. As the ministers worried, Mr. Nanguo, who was adept at profiteering, "volunteered" himself. Although he knew nothing about playing the yu, he used sweet words and tricks to delight King Xuanwang, who rewarded him with wealth and beautiful women. As his fortunes rose, Mr. Nanguo grew increasingly smug, even dreaming of becoming the king himself. Little did he expect that King Xuanwang would suddenly pass away, and his successor, King Minwang, happened to be a ruler who disliked crowds and preferred solo performances.
