"Magic Brush" is a puppet animation film produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1955. The work won first prize in the Second National Children's Literature and Art Creation Awards in 1980.
The cowherd Ma Liang is determined to learn painting and spends all day drawing with branches and charcoal. One night, he dreams of a deity gifting him a magic brush that brings to life whatever he paints. The villagers are deeply grateful when they receive real objects like plowing oxen and waterwheels drawn by his magic brush. When the local authorities learn of this, the magistrate sends men to force Ma Liang to paint a golden mountain. Ma Liang surrounds the golden mountain with an ocean and a sailboat. The greedy magistrate boards the ship with his family, and Ma Liang waves the magic brush to stir up fierce winds and huge waves, causing the sailboat to quickly sink. From then on, Ma Liang freely paints whatever the laboring people need.
