This animated film is a new adaptation of the folk legend "The Carp Leaps Over the Dragon Gate," which won the Best Animated Film award at the first Hundred Flowers Awards by Popular Cinema in China in 1959.
Little black carp Xiao Hei leaps over a bridge pier, earning cheers from his four companions. However, his grandmother is unimpressed, saying that true skill lies in leaping over the Dragon Gate like their ancestors did. She recounts the legendary wonders beyond the Dragon Gate, captivating the five little carps with her tale. After discussing, they decide to set out in search of the Dragon Gate. Along the way, they mistake several landmarks for it, eventually arriving at a massive reservoir. Convinced it is the Dragon Gate, they devise ways to leap over it. After several attempts, they succeed and indeed witness many extraordinarily beautiful sights. As they debate whether to stay or return, they encounter Sister Swallow, who shares with them many new and exciting things.
