"San Mao Joins the Army" is adapted from Mr. Zhang Leping's comic of the same name, "San Mao Joins the Army."
In 1937, the Japanese invaders brazenly launched the war of aggression against China, and the homeless San Mao also enlisted in the army. Dressed in an oversized military uniform that didn't fit him at all, San Mao stood solemnly in the ranks, participating in new recruit training. However, during live grenade-throwing practice, the small and weak San Mao accidentally fumbled, throwing the grenade into the formation. After a loud explosion, the platoon leader's face, blackened and furious, emerged... Finally sent to the front lines, San Mao fought bravely but also caused many comical mishaps. He inexplicably joined a suicide squad and managed to wipe out the Japanese forces in one fell swoop. Chiang Kai-shek personally visited the front lines to boost morale, and to San Mao's great surprise, he caught Chiang's eye. Not long after, a transfer order assigned San Mao to serve as an orderly at the division headquarters. However, it wasn't long before San Mao, acting as the division commander's "nanny," returned to the barracks after the division commander's suicide, reuniting with his old comrades to fight side by side. Following orders, they formed a commando unit and were airdropped into the jungle. But the plane never returned for them, and San Mao and his comrade Lao Gui, tattered and worn, nearly turned into savages. Suddenly, one day, an airplane flew over the jungle, scattering countless leaflets. It turned out the war had ended... San Mao became one of the first soldiers to be demobilized. He removed his military cap, revealing his long-unseen three white hairs, feeling lost and uncertain of where to go...
