L'Enfant qui voulait être un ours (original title: Drengen der Ville Vaere Bjorn) is a French-Danish animated film directed by Jannick Astrup, released in theaters in 2001. The film tells the story of an Inuit child who is kidnapped and raised by bears, and who undertakes to truly become a bear because he does not want to return to live among humans. The film uses traditional cel animation with watercolor-painted backgrounds. The music was composed by Bruno Coulais.
In a bear den, there is a mother bear who has lost her cub. So grief-stricken she contemplates ending her own life, the bear father, unable to bear seeing her so heartbroken, steals a human infant. Under the mother bear's care, the little boy gradually grows up. He learns all the survival skills a bear possesses and considers himself to be a bear. As he grows older, the boy wants to become a real bear. But to become a real bear, he must pass three trials: he must not fear the vast ocean, conquer the howling north wind, and finally, overcome the loneliness of being human.
