This work is Studio Pierrot's first robot anime. Due to favorable ratings during its broadcast, the originally planned 26-episode storyline was extended to 52 episodes.
After the copyright was sold to the United States, WEP adapted the series. In addition to changes in voice acting and theme songs, the second protagonist was promoted to the main protagonist. To align with national standards and television content regulations, episodes containing scenes of death (Episodes 20 and 36) and drinking (Episodes 23 and 42) were either removed or re-edited and merged (parts of Episode 30 were incorporated into Episode 43, which corresponds to [the U.S. version] Episode 44). To integrate these modifications, the U.S. version not only rearranged the episode order but also produced six original episodes.
Television stations in Hong Kong and Taiwan later dubbed the U.S. version for local broadcast, though the translated titles varied by region. When Hong Kong's TVB Jade Channel aired the series in early 1988, it was titled "星空鐵衛." Taiwan's TTV broadcast it from 1989 to 1990 under the title "宇宙奇兵," while in mainland China, it was translated as "战刀骑士."
In 1996, Taiwan's Much TV Heartbeat Channel aired the U.S. version under the title "星际战警" with the original English audio.
