"Dog Detective" was produced by Star Film Company, directed by Zheng Xiaoqiu, with animation by the Wan brothers, and completed in 1933 by Star Film Company. The film tells the story of a female student who, while walking her beloved dog on the street, discovers people smoking opium in an opium den. With the help of her dog, she uncovers that the drugs were shipped in by imperialist warships and piled up like mountains on the shore. She has her dog fetch kerosene to burn the opium, reducing the warships of the foreign powers to scrap iron. The film was made using a combination of live-action and animation, with the live-action part played by actress Zhang Minyu and a real dog used for the canine role.
