"Video Ehon" is a collective term for a series of short children's anime videos released by Walkers Company in May 1988.
It consists of two series: the "World Masterpiece Video Ehon Series," which adapts foreign fairy tales and children's literature into anime, and the "Japanese Folktales Series," which adapts traditional Japanese stories. It gained attention as an unusually low-priced video software at 980 yen per tape for its time and became a major hit, surpassing cumulative sales of 1 million copies by December 1988. In 1989, the "Video Ehon Nakayoshi Set," containing three works from "Video Ehon" compiled together, was released at 1980 yen per tape.
To produce the anime on a low budget, the number of animation cels was extremely limited, resulting in very minimal movement. As an English learning material for children, an English version of the "World Masterpiece Video Ehon Series" titled "VIDEO STORY BOOK" was also released at 2340 yen per tape.
