"One-Legged Paradise," formed by several interconnected small islands, has become heavily polluted, shrouded in smog, and environmentally degraded.
The rulers of One-Legged City, the monopolistic arms dealer "Hengheng" and the major mine owner "Haha," are cunning and greedy, appearing gentlemanly on the surface but ruthless and cruel in reality. They believe money is supreme and stop at nothing to achieve their goals. The two control the lives of the residents and the city's economic lifeline, ruling the entire city through brute force and exploiting the poor to the fullest to amass their wealth. Their loyal police chief, Iron-Fisted Director, manages a vast and pervasive force of police and spies, unwavering in his obedience to Hengheng and Haha. The mayor in charge of the city is Mayor Mianzi, who flatters and appeases, appearing glamorous on the outside. However, the poor are deeply dissatisfied with him, and he fails to win over any high-ranking officials. Iron-Fisted Director constantly schemes behind his back, while others have no say at all, making him a figure who pleases no one.
"Grandpa Orange," who has worked diligently in the artillery factory his entire life, finally uses collected scrap materials to create his proud masterpiece—two identical ugly dolls. The old man hammers away "ding-ding-dong-dong," and the two brothers are thus named "Dingding" and "Dongdong." The elder brother, Dingding, is intelligent and capable, while the younger brother, Dongdong, is humorous, mischievous, brave, and just.
Hengheng and Haha believe that twin brothers cannot be privately created in One-Legged City, so they issue a warrant for Dingding and Dongdong. The entire city is thrown into panic as police and spies swarm out to hunt down the "Dingdong" brothers. During their escape, the elder brother Dingding is captured, while the younger brother Dongdong falls into the sewer, leading to a dramatic reversal in their fates.
In the sewer, Dongdong encounters a scholar who has gone into hiding due to persecution by Hengheng and Haha. He sees the scholar's cultivated immortal grass and is deeply inspired, making a pact with the scholar to build a green and equal One-Legged City in the future. Returning to the slums, Dongdong befriends many companions who share his hardships, and through them, he comes to recognize the ugly truth about Hengheng and Haha. Unwilling to endure exploitation, he leads his friends in resisting the oppressive forces and dismantles the ruling class's final deterrent—a monstrous pet cat raised with exorbitant taxes and funds. Meanwhile, Dingding willingly aligns himself with the wealthy rulers Hengheng and Haha, becoming their godson. Pampered and spoiled, he develops many bad habits, becoming self-centered and arrogant. He even helps Hengheng and Haha bully the poor, sometimes surpassing them in cruelty. Dongdong, remembering their brotherly bond, always hopes to change Dingding's mindset through persuasion, and thus the story unfolds...
One is a fugitive, hiding everywhere; the other is a royal relative, wielding immense power. One is constantly on the run, living day by day; the other lives in luxury, enjoying all the riches.
