In Nordic legends, the souls of those who drown at sea transform into seals. A seal, having taken human form to swim, had her seal skin stolen by a hunter. Without her skin, she was forced to stay and live as an ordinary human, under the hunter's control, and became his wife. Yet, her desire to return to the ocean never wavered.
