The Ferdinand family of three originally lived ordinary, happy days. Ferdinand, a retired sailor, lived with his wife Julie and their 8-year-old adopted son Tom in a barn on the mountain. On this day, Tom's good friend Lili came to stay at the Ferdinand household, as her parents, Hannibal and Ruth, were heading to Africa to search for crocodiles to add a new member to the zoo they operated. During the scorching summer, a group of frogs by the pond issued a shocking prophecy to Tom while he was playing: "Heaven will rain for forty nights and forty days, causing an unprecedented great flood that will submerge everything in the world..."
