The pilot film was not released at the time (it is now included as a video extra on the DVD of the theatrical version), but it appears to have been produced in 1981. The theatrical film "SPACE ADVENTURE COBRA" was released on July 3, 1982, and shortly after, the TV series "Space Cobra" began on October 7. Both were directed by Osamu Dezaki, with the TV series co-credited with Akio Takami. Director Dezaki reportedly left the TV series midway to participate in the production of "Golgo 13," which was released in May 1983.
