A college girl named Urano who "loves books more than three meals a day" is reborn as Myne, the daughter of a soldier in a world where books do not exist.
The literacy rate among commoners is low, and books made from parchment are expensive—something only nobles can afford.
Thus, Myne makes a resolution:
"If there are no books, I'll just make them myself!"
After much trial and error, she meets the merchant Benno and completes plant-based paper in order to become a merchant apprentice. However, Myne's body is being consumed by the "Devouring Fever."
In this world where nobles possess magical power, there are occasionally commoners born with magic—these are the "Devourers." Without a magic tool to absorb their ever-increasing mana, they cannot survive.
Around this time, during a baptism ceremony, Myne discovers the temple's library and directly appeals to the High Priest to become a shrine maiden apprentice. After much commotion, it is decided that Myne will become a blue shrine maiden apprentice, offering her mana.
However, many are displeased that Myne, a commoner by birth, wears the "blue robes" typically granted only to nobles, and her path forward is fraught with difficulties.
Attendants full of troublemakers, the temple's hierarchical society...
The norms of the temple, different from both Urano's time and Myne's lower-city life, stand in her way. Will the day ever come when Myne can read to her heart's content!?
And will Myne be able to create books!?
