"Happy Tree Friends" (literal translation: "Happy Tree Friends") is an animated series by Mondo Mini Shows, filled with dark humor comedy. It was created by Kenn Navarro, Warren Graff, Aubrey Ankrum, Rhode Montijo, and others.
On the official website of the series, it states, "Not recommended for small children and big babies." In stark contrast to the cute designs of the cartoon characters, the entire show is filled with extreme violence. The series is saturated with gore, with each episode featuring the deaths of numerous characters through very cruel or "innovative" methods, ranging from massive blood sprays to visceral explosions.
Compared to the death scenes in "The Itchy and Scratchy Show" (a fictional program within The Simpsons), the depictions in Happy Tree Friends are more direct.
Each episode lasts approximately 3 to 5 minutes and stars one or more characters. The main series features a total of 22 characters, all depicted as rather adorable little animals. It is very common for the episodes to start with everyday life or jokes, only to escalate into major tragedies. The cartoon essentially has no dialogue, but it does include some sighs and screams from the characters. Clearly, the only understandable language is their reactions.
The cartoon often concludes with a philosophical life lesson, usually related to the protagonist of that episode.
Happy Tree Friends was conceived when Rhode Montijo drew a yellow rabbit somewhat resembling Cuddles on a piece of paper and wrote the line "Resistance Is Futile" underneath it.
