"Matinee Mouse" is the 149th theatrical short in the "Tom and Jerry" series, the 22nd episode produced by Chuck Jones, and the 6th compilation episode of the entire series.
After a fierce battle, Tom and Jerry decide to call a truce. They go out for a stroll and discover that a movie theater is screening the cartoon "Tom and Jerry." They immediately agree to buy tickets and enter the cinema. As scenes of Jerry's misfortunes appear on the screen, Tom feels triumphant, which irritates Jerry. Unable to hold back, Jerry starts teasing Tom again. Later, when scenes of Tom's mishaps are shown, their reactions completely reverse. Eventually, they tear up their agreement and start fighting each other inside the theater...
As a compilation episode, the opening fight and the film screened in the theater incorporate clips from multiple "Tom and Jerry" cartoons produced by Hanna and Barbera, including "The Flying Cat," "Professor Tom," "The Missing Mouse," "Jerry and the Lion," "Love That Pup," "The Flying Sorceress," "Jerry's Diary," and "The Truce Hurts." Consequently, Hanna, Barbera, and many animators from that era are credited in this episode's production staff. The scenes of Tom and Jerry reconciling, going out, and in the theater are newly animated, and the ending of "The Truce Hurts" is subtly modified to fit this episode. The music is entirely composed by Dean Elliott, with no use of Scott Bradley's original scores.
