1982, 19-year-old Ari Folman served in the Israel Defense Forces. Later in 2006, while discussing his nightmarish wartime experiences with former comrades, Folman was shocked to discover he could recall nothing from that period. He then began visiting and interviewing his old army comrades and friends. Through conversations with them, Folman gradually recovered his memories of the events surrounding the Sabra and Shatila massacre.
