In 1895, the Imperial Astronomical Bureau predicted that a pair of infants born in Shanghai under a full moon, whose mother died during childbirth, would bear a heavenly mandate to overthrow the tyrannical Qing Dynasty. Upon learning of this, Empress Dowager Cixi ordered their capture and execution. However, the news leaked, and a patriot named Shang Kou, seeking to protect the divinely ordained children, arranged for the French first mate Martin to secretly take them to France to be raised. The Empress Dowager tasked a chief eunuch with leading a dedicated search party to hunt them down, and imprisoned the twins' father.
As the children grew, they discovered that whenever they held hands, magical power would emerge. They were later informed that they must travel to the Forbidden City to replace the stone stele inscribed with Laozi's Tao Te Ching in order to save the Chinese people. On their journey to China, the twins engaged in a battle of wits and courage with assassins sent by Cixi. Ultimately, during their travels across Eurasia, the divinely ordained children learned to harness their seven distinct magical powers, overcame the evil forces, and returned to China. Under the cover of a patriotic organization assembled by Shang Kou, the twins infiltrated the Forbidden City, fulfilled their heavenly mandate, and rescued their imprisoned father.
