Beneath the compulsory veil lie the dark fates of three Iranian women. One, whose husband is imprisoned for drug use, must single-handedly care for her mute young child. Unable to obtain approval for divorce and remarriage, she resorts to selling her body to survive. Another, after finally finding a job while pregnant, is blocked by her husband who refuses to sign the consent form allowing her to work. The third, unable to resist, becomes intimate with a young musician, only to find herself in deep trouble for losing her virginity. In this patriarchal nation filled with taboos, gender discrimination, hypocrisy, and abuse of power are rampant. A single prank phone call further exposes the immense pressures women face. Such a story could only be told through animation—filming live actors against a green screen, then using rotoscoping to create a vivid and fiercely accusatory portrait of Tehran. Selected for the Cannes Film Festival's Critics' Week and the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
