The story takes place during the War of Resistance Against Japan, when the New Fourth Army established a red corridor in the Hangzhou Bay area, organizing personnel to conduct guerrilla warfare behind enemy lines in eastern Zhejiang. Despite his young age, Yang Laixi is clever and agile. As a soldier in the reconnaissance and communications squad, he repeatedly uncovers crucial enemy intelligence, helping the people of eastern Zhejiang fight against the Japanese and puppet forces. While assisting in the transfer of wounded soldiers, Yang Laixi is exposed by a traitor. To prevent the New Fourth Army wounded from being discovered, he even drags a puppet soldier with him over a cliff, sustaining severe injuries. After being rescued by villagers, Yang Laixi recuperates in the village but remains determined to reconnect with the main forces. He organizes a small anti-Japanese squad in the village, leading the locals in resisting the Japanese invaders.
