Barry Purves says: "The inspiration for 'Screen Play' came from an oriental porcelain plate I own. It was adorned with beautiful patterns and decorations, and as I gazed at it, the story began to take shape in my mind." (This plate appears on the prop screen at the end of the film.) Using the traditional Japanese theatrical form—Kabuki—the film tells a poignant love story of a farmer who falls in love with a noble lady, ultimately leading to their tragic double suicide.
