In the ninth year of the Wanli era of the Great Ming Dynasty (1581), a Kunqu opera house named Wanfu Lou appeared in the capital. Led by the two Qi troupe masters, senior and junior, the troupe performed bold and expressive dramas that satirized current affairs and settled grievances with flair, causing a sensation throughout the land. Little did anyone know that behind the stage of this opera house lay a hidden battle between the reigning Wanli Emperor and the Chief Grand Secretary Zhang Juzheng, conflicts over power between the Grand Secretariat and court officials, as well as connections to the internal troubles of the Ming Dynasty and external threats from the Tatars. Through the entangled grievances and spirited clashes among the young Wanli Emperor, Princess Zhu Yao’e, the senior and junior Qi troupe masters, Chief Grand Secretary Zhang Juzheng, the "Jianghu Chief Secretary" Tang Xianzu, and others—ranging from the imperial court to the distant Jianghu—a grand drama unfolds.
