The first theatrical film of the TV anime depicting Kitaro's exploits as he battles Southern yokai. Based on the manga of the same name by Shigeru Mizuki. Screenplay by Hiroyuki Hoshiyama, directed by Takeshi Shirato. Released as part of the "Toei Manga Matsuri" program.
Chinpo, a Southern yokai plotting to dominate Japan's yokai realm, decides to join forces with Nurarihyon, the leader of Japanese yokai. Meanwhile, Kitaro hears that Yumeko-chan has been kidnapped and begins searching for her, only to be attacked by the Southern yokai Akamata and Yashi Otoshi. However, with the backup of Neko Musume, Konaki Jijii, and Sunakake Baba, they manage to defeat Yashi Otoshi and his allies. Determined to rescue Yumeko-chan, Kitaro heads toward the Southern yokai's ship on a raft but is attacked by the yokai beast Koryu and thrown into the sea. Just then, Nurikabe arrives, body-slams Koryu, and saves Kitaro. With everyone's cooperation, Kitaro succeeds in destroying Chinpo's ship, where Yumeko-chan is held captive. Chinpo and his group escape on Nurarihyon's motorboat but end up crashing into a reef due to infighting. Nurarihyon is thrown overboard and dies, while Chinpo flees in a panic.
