Based on Shotaro Ikenami's novel "Onihei Hankachō", the story is a period piece depicting Hasegawa Heizō, who holds the position of "Hitsuke Tōzoku Aratamekata"—a role akin to a modern special police force—as he brings criminals to justice in Edo. Since the publication of the first work in 1967 in Bungeishunju's "All Yomimono" magazine, the series has amassed a total of 135 stories by 1990.
Marking the 50th anniversary of the "Onihei Hankachō" series in 2017, "Onihei" is its first TV anime adaptation. The casting has generated buzz, featuring veteran voice talents such as Kenyu Horiuchi in the lead role of Heizō, Romi Park as Omasa—a female spy who admires Heizō, and Daisuke Namikawa as Heizō's son, Tatsuzō.
The newly announced release, "Onihei ~Sono Otoko, Hasegawa Heizō~", explores the question, "Just what kind of man is Hasegawa Heizō, feared by villains as 'Oni no Heizō'?" through the eyes of a mysterious young man. Ambitiously structured, the work features characters surrounding Heizō—such as thieves, spies, and family members—passionately discussing his appeal. Additionally, it spotlights the enigmatic younger years of Heizō, delving into his character.
This OVA is packed with highlights that rival the TV series, including the true identity of the mysterious youth approaching Heizō, intense sword-fighting action, and fragrant love scenes. The DVD, priced at 5,800 yen (excluding tax), includes special bonuses: a specially edited paperback version of "Onihei Hankachō" and pilot version footage. It promises to be an essential viewing not only for all "Onihei" fans, including those of the drama and original novel, but also for anyone about to immerse themselves in the world of "Onihei".
