A professor researching folklore opens a forbidden book and becomes possessed by an ancient Japanese thunder demon, who is determined to return and rule the world. The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense sends Hellboy and a team of agents to investigate the case. During the investigation, when Hellboy picks up a samurai sword, he is transported into a world filled with Japanese legends, a realm teeming with all kinds of ghosts and monsters. Agents Kate Corrigan and Russell Thorne begin tracking the possessed professor in an attempt to find and bring Hellboy back to the human world.
