In the year 2039, a human survey team on the Tharsis Plateau of Mars discovered the ruins of an alien civilization, only to be completely wiped out by suddenly appearing alien lifeforms. To counter the threat posed by these alien beings, named the Tarsians, the United Nations formed the United Nations Space Force. In 2046, junior high school third-year student Nagamine Mikako passed the selection exam to become a robot pilot for the United Nations Space Force. The following year, in pursuit of the Tarsians, she was assigned to the Lysithea Fleet. Departing from Earth aboard the fleet's flagship, the Lysithea, she left behind the person she loved, Terao Noboru. As the investigation fleet followed the traces of the Tarsians, moving farther and farther from Earth, the distance between the two grew to be measured in light-years, and the time it took for their mobile phone emails to reach each other grew longer and longer. Finally, Mikako arrived at a planet in the Alpha Centauri star system, 8.7 light-years from Earth. There, she sent a text message to Noboru that would take 8.7 years to reach Earth. In the subsequent battle against the Tarsians, the United Nations forces were nearly annihilated, but Mikako survived.
