This less-than-a-minute short film presents a simple storyline that reveals the relationship between humans and God. Two slices of meat are cut from a large piece of meat. These two slices represent a man and a woman. From meeting to falling in love, and finally to union...
From a large piece of meat on the cutting board, two slices are cut away. The male meat slice meets the shy female meat slice for the first time, filled with flirtation and ambiguity. Burning with desire, the male meat slice eagerly steps forward and embraces the female meat slice. Amidst the ethereal music from an old record player, the two slices of meat dance together in an embrace. They meet naked in the flour, intoxicated by the taste of passionate love. Their flesh-red bodies gradually become covered in thick flour, yet what awaits them is not the paradise of love after passion. A merciless fork coldly pierces down—their fate has long been destined in the sizzling oil pan.
This surrealist work, "Meat Love," created by Czech film and animation master Jan Švankmajer, once again stages a raw, alternative "raw meat" love story in less than a minute. The "raw meat" that runs through many of his works, under the close-up shots of fast montage, vividly depicts humanity's most primal sexual desires and the subconscious cravings. This genius, who has been enamored with surrealist art since his student days, has long deconstructed and reconstructed food—more precisely, "meat"—to its extreme.
