After the American Civil War, a group of retired artillerymen gathered in the Gun Club, idling away their days. The club's president, Barbicane, proposed building a cannon capable of launching a projectile to the Moon. The French adventurer Ardan volunteered to ride the projectile on a lunar expedition. After numerous twists and turns, they finally reached the Moon and safely returned to Earth. Through this experience, they hoped that cannons—weapons of destruction—would become relics of history, allowing science and technology to serve humanity's peace and development.
