Afterward, he becomes friends with the fox family. In the city, there is a princess who is seeking a husband. She possesses a magic mirror that can see everything in the heavens and on earth. Only a suitor who can evade the mirror's search can marry the princess; otherwise, he will be beheaded. Unable to ignore the princess's cruelty, Xia Wudong decides to propose to her as well. The princess gives him three chances to hide. In the first two attempts, Xia Wudong fails to escape the magic mirror's power. On the final try, with the help of the fox family, the mirror cannot find him no matter what. In the end, the princess keeps her promise and agrees to marry him. However, before the wedding, Xia Wudong leaves the palace, leaving the princess with a message: "A cruel woman is only fit to marry a devil." The princess faints in anger.
