In the morning, the chattering of sparrows wakes the old woman. After getting up, she fills a basket with dates and leaves home. Soon, the weather turns cloudy, and wind and rain begin to fall. When the rain stops, the ground is covered with fallen dates. A hedgehog, having just weathered the storm, spots the dates and excitedly rolls around, skewering them on its spines, ready to carry them home.
On the way, the hedgehog meets a sparrow. When asked where the dates on its back came from, the hedgehog replies that it picked them up from the ground. However, the sparrow shakes its head, saying dates don’t grow on the ground—they belong to the old woman. Feeling ashamed and wanting to prevent other small animals from taking the old woman’s dates, the hedgehog comes up with an idea: it will join the sparrow in helping the old woman gather the fallen dates and bring them indoors.
