A half-wolf, half-dog husky named Balto faces rejection from both humans and sled dogs in late 19th-century Alaska. Uncertain of where he belongs, Balto finds companionship only in his four close friends: the beautiful husky Jenna, the noisy but kind-hearted goose Boris, and the shy, adorable polar bears Muk and Luk. Though Balto’s “mixed-breed” status sets him apart, his friends care not for his appearance but for his noble heart.
Even as he struggles for acceptance, when the town of Nome is struck by a diphtheria outbreak and a blizzard delays the delivery of vital medicine—with the finest sled team lost in the storm—Balto relies on his unique abilities to locate the stranded team. Leading them through the perilous conditions, he successfully delivers the medicine to Nome, ultimately becoming the town’s hero.
