Hanamichi Sakuragi, a first-year student at Shohoku High School, has a history of being rejected by 50 girls in a row during junior high. The 50th girl’s remark, “I like someone from the basketball team, Mr. Oda,” makes him detest basketball deeply. Upon entering high school, he is reignited with hope when the beautiful girl Haruko Akagi asks him, “Do you like basketball?” To win Haruko’s heart, Sakuragi joins the basketball team without hesitation and improves at an astonishing pace. In the Shohoku basketball team, captain Takenori Akagi is a DUNK expert who has been unable to achieve success due to a lack of good teammates. However, this year, Kaede Rukawa—already a basketball star in junior high—Ryota Miyagi, who has just recovered from a serious illness, and Hisashi Mitsui—the former junior high MVP who once lost his way—all join the Shohoku basketball team, making Captain Akagi’s dream of conquering the nation no longer just a fantasy. During the prefectural tournament, Takenori Akagi, Kaede Rukawa, Ryota Miyagi, Hisashi Mitsui, and the rookie Hanamichi Sakuragi work together seamlessly and finally secure a ticket to the national tournament.
