German animator David O'Reilly, who has previously worked with rock supergroup U2 and pop queen Lady Gaga, recently released his latest short film "The External World" online, following his award-winning work "Please Say Something." Staying true to his minimalist, bizarre, and critically charged black humor style, the film depicts the surreal journey of a young boy learning piano under immense pressure. The film premiered at the 67th Venice International Film Festival in September last year and has since gained recognition at the 2010 Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) and the recently concluded 2011 Sundance Film Festival (SFF). While netizens remain divided over the animation style, with polarized reactions ranging from "alternative" to "crude," and some even criticizing its "aggressive" presentation as highly discomforting, the director remains unfazed by the subjective challenges of art, openly stating that the film follows a "non-mainstream" path.
David O'Reilly, who has produced music videos for Lady Gaga and U2, fully showcases his unique animation style in his award-winning short "Please Say Something." Above is his latest animated short—"The External World"—which has successively won awards at the Ottawa International Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, and others. It is truly exceptional.
